Sustainability at Thermia

Sustainability

At Thermia, we are working towards a more sustainable future. We manufacture high-quality heat pumps with care for the environment and an eye on the future. By combining renewable energy with innovation, we create the heating solutions of tomorrow.

We work to ensure that every home is heated by the energy that nature provides – completely free and completely renewable. This has been the starting point for our business since we launched our first heat pump in 1974.

Sustainability has always been a natural part of Thermia. When Per Andersson founded the business, he had an idea that “The brands you put out must not only be the best in their time, but ahead of their time, above their time”. Back then, sustainability was mainly about quality and longevity.

Sustainability has always been a natural part of Thermia. When Per Andersson founded the business, he had an idea that “The brands you put out must not only be the best in their time, but ahead of their time, above their time”. Back then, sustainability was mainly about quality and longevity.

Today, the concept encompasses so much more, and our sustainability work has grown in line with the world’s increased demands and expectations. In addition to renewable energy, we are now working on issues ranging from climate and refrigerants to gender equality among our staff and human rights in our supply chains.

However, our goal remains the same – to create heating solutions that benefit both people and the environment.

Renewable energy for the future of heating

Did you know that heat pumps use renewable energy to heat our homes? By harnessing the energy available in the environment – the sun’s stored energy in rocks, soil, water and air – a heat pump can convert that energy into heating or cooling our homes. A heat pump is like a small power plant that can deliver 3-6 times more energy than it consumes. For us, this is more than just smart technology – it’s a step towards a more renewable and self-sufficient energy system. A smart solution for the future.

Energy is, therefore, an issue we are constantly working on. Whether it’s making our products as energy efficient as possible or reducing energy consumption in our own production facilities.

How we work with sustainability

Sustainability covers many areas, from energy and climate to employee well-being and safety. We therefore work on a range of sustainability issues to reduce our negative impact and increase our positive impact on people and the environment across the value chain. In 2024, we conducted a double-materiality analysis, identifying six material sustainability themes across corporate responsibility, our workforce, consumers and end-users, workers in the value chain, climate change, resource use, and the circular economy.

In our Sustainability Report, you can read more about our work and the targets we have set for 2030.

Quality at every step

At Thermia, quality has always been closely linked to sustainability. We know that a long-lasting heat pump is better for both the customer and the environment. That’s why we develop and manufacture our products to meet high standards of quality, safety and durability. We strive to maximise the life of our products and offer spare parts and support for many years, all to ensure that our heat pumps continue to deliver heat long into the future.

Since 2014, we have also been certified according to the ISO 9001 quality management standard. In our quality policy, you can read more about our commitment to the high quality of our products.

Caring for the environment

We have been working for many years to reduce our environmental impact and have been certified according to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard since 2018. The environmental issues we focus on include energy, refrigerants, climate, waste and chemicals.

For us, it is important to practice what we preach. That’s why our production facility is heated with our own heat pumps, which both increase our self-sufficiency and reduce the cost of purchased electricity. The electricity we need to buy comes from fossil-free sources. In parallel, we are working to make production as resource efficient as possible by minimising waste and chemical use. We have also worked proactively for several years to be at the forefront of refrigerants with lower climate impact and welcome the EU’s new F-gas regulation, which imposes stricter requirements on the industry for 2027.

To further strengthen our environmental work, we have also started conducting climate calculations for our operations, which give us a better basis for setting goals and following up on our climate impact.

In our environmental policy, you can read more about our overall environmental commitments and how we work to contribute to a more sustainable future.

Our social responsibility

It is important for us to look after our employees and the society we are part of. For many years, we have worked to create a safe, inclusive and attractive workplace with zero tolerance for discrimination and a strong focus on health, safety and well-being. We are also committed to our local community, supporting local sports and associations, so that we can contribute to a more vibrant and sustainable region.

But our social responsibility goes beyond that. We have a responsibility not only to our customers to deliver safe and reliable products, but also to the people who help create them. For this reason working closely and responsibly with our suppliers is crucial to ensure good working and labour conditions throughout the supply chain.
