Four meters of frost

For almost 20 years, PO Olofsson has heated his properties in Vassijaure in Lapland using geothermal heat pumps from Thermia. The weather can sometimes be extremely stressful for both people and technology.

Situated around 130 km north of Kiruna is Sweden’s northernmost railway station named Vassijaure. Surrounding this railway station is a small village of the same name.

Here, local resident PO Olofsson owns three larger properties and a holiday home. Common to all properties is that, year after year, they are heated using heat pumps from Thermia.

As I said, PO is satisfied with the Thermia heat pumps but, to tell you the truth, he is perhaps even more satisfied with Thermia’s reseller, Lennart Kruuka at Energiteknik in Kiruna.

All of the heat pumps have worked without problems for many years. Some of them eventually needed some maintenance, but that is not at all unusual given the arctic cold they are exposed to. Vassijaure effectively has its very own climate zone with four meters of frost and an annual average temperature below zero. There is often at least one meter more snow here than other areas, and the road is closed for around 30 days a year.”

PO’s three larger properties function as hostels that he rents out on an annual basis to people who are attracted by the fantastic natural surroundings. The three properties are all equipped with geothermal heat pumps. In the largest property of 1,000 square meters, featuring 27 rooms and 54 bedrooms, the time has come to replace the pump. The loyal old Thermia Diplomat 16 will be replaced with an Atlas 18.
