The heart of a wonderful new home – the Thermia Calibra Eco 8

Intimate neighborhood

Modern new-build home

From the very start of a project to build a wonderful new home, designed to be as modern, comfortable and efficient as possible, a top-quality heat pump was at the heart of the thinking.

With this in mind, the investor contacted an authorized installer at the design stage, even before the construction of the new house began. He needed to explore the practicalities and cost of a really good heat pump that would maximise comfort and efficiency all year round. For this reason, an air source heat pump was integral to the initial design.

“Heat pumps are an innovative and creative way of taking action to protect the environment and will contribute positively to reducing CO2 emissions in the years to come.”

Desire for leading edge technology

The investor wanted an efficient and economical heating system, as well as a plentiful supply of sanitary hot water. As the house was a new build, the family wanted the most up-to-date solutions that would be used for a long time and require as little maintenance as possible.

The building was designed to be low energy, so most of the year it would only need minimal power for heating. However, at certain times of year, when the weather is more extreme, with much lower outside temperatures, there was a requirement for sufficient power to generate heat and hot water quickly and efficiently.

As the project progressed, the customer was unsure where to place the outdoor unit for the air source heat pump. The optimal location, which would allow the shortest possible distance to the indoor unit to maximise efficiency, was too close to the area that was planned for a terrace. The customer had reservations about noise and blowing air, so the team reconsidered and looked at a geothermal heat pump.
The installer recommended the Thermia Calibra Eco 8 ground source heat pump with modulated heating capacity between 2 and 8 kW. The Calibra Eco is exceptionally efficient and requires hardly any maintenance. This was a better all-round solution than an air source heat pump, as, with the Calibra Eco, there is no noise, lower electricity consumption and it will last much longer, as the ground source heat collector is practically eternal.

The heat pump model and power capacity were selected to deliver against the detailed design specification for the new construction. According to calculations, a geothermal heat pump with a power of 5–6 kW was required. Capable of delivering 8 KW, the Calibra Eco 8 with inverter technology was perfect.
