28 years in use – quality from Thermia

28 years in use

The pioneer in heat pumps in Iceland

Thermia’s history begins with the company’s founder, Per Andersson. At just ten years of age, he started his career as an apprentice blacksmith, before going on to produce his own range of kitchen stoves. The driving force behind his business was his desire to develop better and better products. In time, the range expanded to include wood-burning boilers, coke-fired boilers, hot water tanks, radiators and numerous other heating products.

Always with the same basic philosophy: to make the market’s best products. Or in the words of Per Andersson himself: “The products one releases must be not only the best of their time, but before their time, over time.”

How long does a heat pump last?

What is the life expectancy of a heat pump? This is a question that many homeowners ask themselves before buying a heat pump. Generally, the average lifespan of units built in the 1970s and 1980s is around 15 years, but individual units may last much longer depending on how they are used and how well they are maintained. One such case was in Iceland, where Ásmundur and Guðmundur Jónsson used their Thermia heat pump for 28 years – clearly demonstrating the difference in quality between average units and Thermia.

I have been using a Thermia heat pump since 1983. In 2011, it was time to replace the unit because of its age and the cost of repair. I contacted Verklagnir ehf and ordered a new Thermia heat pump. Everything was exemplary and the pump works very well. Energy savings have increased significantly with the new model.”

The heat pump pioneers in Iceland were Ásmundur and Guðmundur Jónsson from Hofsstaðir in Mývatnssveit. After exploring different heating solutions in 1983, they decided to buy a Thermia Duo heat pump, which was specially designed for this installation using single-phase electricity. In 2011, Ásmundur contacted Verklagnir ehf. After 28 years, his old heat pump had finally finished its work and he wanted to replace it with a new Thermia Diplomat Optimum 10 kW heat pump.
